This curated lot features works by iconic poets and authors from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Each volume represents the craftsmanship of its time, with handsome bindings and timeless literary contributions. While six of the books highlight poetry from celebrated writers, the inclusion of Sir Roger De Coverley offers a glimpse into early English prose, making this a unique and visually appealing collection. Included Titles: 1. Sir Roger De Coverley by the Spectator Published in 1851 by Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, London. Bound in striking black leather panels with gold gilt embellishment and a gold gilt textblock, this work includes notes and illustrations by W. Henry Wills. Front free paper is missing, all other pages are secure to the hinge. A timeless collection of essays originally penned by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele for The Spectator magazine, reflecting the social and cultural life of early 18th-century England. 2. The Poetical Works of Alexander Pope Published by Hurst & Company, New York. Undated. Features beautiful green cloth boards with gold lettering on the spine and a picturesque frontispiece illustration mounted on the front panel. Alexander Pope is renowned for his satirical verse and philosophical works, including The Rape of the Lock and An Essay on Man. 3. The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott Published by Myers & Company, London. Undated, pre-1900. Presented in superb maroon leather panels with gold gilt lettering on the front panel and spine, as well as a gold gilt textblock. While there is a full seam split between the decorative front pastedown and the front free paper, the overall presentation remains intact. Scott’s poetry, including The Lady of the Lake and Marmion, played a pivotal role in the Romantic movement and inspired generations of readers. 4. The Poems of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Published by J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd. Undated. Handsome maroon leather panels with gold gilt lettering and embellishment on the front panel and along the entire spine. Longfellow, one of America’s most beloved poets, is known for Evangeline and The Song of Hiawatha, works that beautifully capture both history and legend. 5. Longfellow’s Poetical Works Published by The Standard Library Company, London. Undated. Bound in red cloth boards with a stamped floral design. While there is a full seam split between the front pastedown and free paper, all pages remain secure to the hinge. A testament to Longfellow’s enduring appeal, this volume offers his most celebrated works. 6. The Poetical Works of Thomas Moore Published by Oxford University Press, Henry Frowde, London. Circa 1895. Deep maroon cloth boards with gold gilt lettering on the title and spine, as well as a gold gilt textblock. Known for Irish Melodies and Lalla Rookh, Moore’s lyrical poetry captures the romance and spirit of his Irish heritage. 7. The Complete Works and Letters of John Keats (Cambridge Edition) Published in 1899 by Houghton, Mifflin and Company. Maroon boards with bright gold gilt lettering on the front panel. Keats’s works, from Ode to a Nightingale to Endymion, exemplify the beauty and intensity of Romantic poetry. This volume also includes his letters, offering insight into the mind of one of literature’s most tragic yet brilliant figures. Notes on Condition: Each book has been carefully photographed, with notes on bindings and any notable wear. While some volumes show signs of age, they collectively present a striking and cohesive display. I had a limit to how many pictures I can post here so please reach out if you are interested as I have many more of each book. Why This Lot? This collection celebrates the artistry of both the written word and bookbinding. With its mix of poetry and prose, it appeals to collectors of antiquarian literature, offering a snapshot of literary history from some of the most influential writers of the period. For additional photos or questions, feel free to reach out. Happy to provide shipping options! (This lot would do great with flat rate shipping within Canada Post!)
