About Thomas Clarkson and Sons: The business had been in existence since the 17th century. The Clarkson family were first recorded as clockmakers in 1640 and continued manufacturing, becoming known for their long-case clocks. In response to the declining popularity of long-case clocks, the family founded a furniture business at Snow Hill in 1840. In 1960, the company was bought by Army & Navy Stores Ltd, and, in 1965, the company's registered office was changed to 105 Victoria Street, Westminster, London. Around this time, the store was demolished and rebuilt. The company ceased to trade in January 1974 and was liquidated in 1978.
