E. Pauline Johnson: First Edition of The Moccasin Maker (1913) + The Native Voice Centenary Edition (1961) Offered here as a set: a scarce 1913 first edition of The Moccasin Maker by E. Pauline Johnson, along with the July 1961 centenary edition of The Native Voice, dedicated to Johnson’s legacy. These two pieces together form a rich tribute to one of Canada’s most enduring literary voices. Pauline Johnson (Tekahionwake), born in 1861 to a Mohawk chief and an English mother, was a poet, performer, and writer who worked to bridge Indigenous and settler cultures through her work. The Moccasin Maker, her posthumously published collection of twelve short stories, captures aspects of Indigenous life and identity with empathy, strength, and a distinct literary grace. The opening story is a portrait of Johnson’s mother, and the stories that follow explore the complexities of being Indigenous in a colonial world. This copy was published by William Briggs, Toronto, in 1913. Bound in green cloth boards with black titles. Includes a tissue-guarded photographic portrait of Johnson opposite the title page, along with black-and-white photographic plates throughout. 248 pages. Condition Notes: Bumping to corners (see photos for reference) Previous owner’s name and inscription dated 1919 on front endpaper Clean interior pages Partial seam splits at the front pastedown and between the frontispiece and title page Accompanying the book is the July 1961 issue of The Native Voice (Vol. XV, No. 7), a special centenary edition commemorating Pauline Johnson’s life and work. The Native Voice was a Vancouver-based publication launched in 1946 by the Native Brotherhood of British Columbia. It played an important role in raising awareness of Indigenous issues in Canada and often featured the voices and concerns of First Nations communities. This centenary issue includes photographs, biographical details, and reflections on Johnson’s impact as both a writer and cultural figure. A valuable pairing for any collector of early Indigenous literature, Canadian heritage, or Pauline Johnson’s writings. Happy to discuss shipping options!
