Bike Fork Steering Tube Removal / Install: I have got into doing Road & MTB bike fork Steering Tube removal and install after a request from a local shop if I could salvage a good fork with a too short steer tube and be able to put it back into ops with a longer steer tube. I have watched a South African Shop Tech’s you tube video doing fork steer tube & legs removal/install and I felt I could at least do the tube R&R project. I obtained a 12 ton press, had some fork support jigs fabricated, painted with rubber paint to prevent fork/jigs metal to metal contact, put together a removal/install ram with sockets assembly, obtained new steering tubes from a supplier. I have done some R&D R&R testing on some ‘guinea pig’ MTB forks and found out I am able to remove, install tubes without damaging forks. The fork steer tubes though cannot be previously welded to the fork crown, just pressed in. If you are on Vancouver Island only I would go as far as Nanaimo or Metro Victoria to pick up, repair, deliver fork back but there would be a gasoline charge besides the part & labour costs. Also, you could come by my place, watch me R&R and be back on the road in minutes for part & labour costs only (gasoline cost would be your expense). I obtain tubes from EU shops and depending on their stock tubes are 250mm-350mm 1” threaded and 1 1/8” threadless chro-moly and alloy. I can also get 1 1/8” x 1 1/2” Steer Tubes. Some Jpegs of Hydraulic Press, Jigs & Tubes attached. I have also made up some MP4 videos to show how I protect the fork, remove & install a steer tube. NOTE: This is a Bicycle Fork Steer Tube Service, It is NOT a sell/for sale Ad.
