Canadiana & Decorative Arts Art Pottery gallon stoneware jug stamped Highlights Vintage from the 19th century Dispatches from a small business in Canada Read the full list of materials Materials: wabi sabi, eberhardt, crock, eastern pottery, ontario pottery, rustic decor Highlights: Width: 10 inches Height: 15 1/2 inches Depth: 10 inches The Don Bridge Pottery, established in 1852, was located on the east side of present day Broadview Ave., between Queen St. and Eastern Ave., in Toronto. Eberhardt, who owned and operated the pottery from 1863 to 1879, was the second in a succession of potters to run the business during the pottery's 35 years of operation. A couple of small traces of overpaint are evident and a horizontal crack exists at the midpoint of the handle. As well, a potstone chip is evident to the right of the decoration and a larger vertical chip exists beneath that towards the base of the jug. The horizontal lines that encircle the center of the jug are not cracks and were likely caused by a "rib"; the tool used by the potter to shape the rim and body. Nicholas Eberhardt. Salt-glazed stoneware. Canadian. c1865. 15.5" H x 10" Diameter. CODE-POT Debossed, "N. Eberhardt Toronto C.W". 14 x 8.5" (diam). Handle repaired. Two sections of the handle have been glued together a little out of alignment. As a result, one section of the handle is slightly elevated above the other (see photo). A couple of minor glaze flakes, a very small void on the right side (manufacturing flaw) and traces of a blue overpaint exist. A little blistering is evident on what is otherwise a beautiful sunflower decoration. Jug manufactured at the Toronto pottery by Nicholas Eberhardt (1865-1879).
