My name is Michael and I use he/him pronouns. I respectfully acknowledge that I live on the unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, and that their enduring relationship with this land has existed since time immemorial. I hold a BA (with Distinction) and MA in Political Science and a JD from the University of Victoria. During my MA, I worked as a Teaching Assistant in Canadian politics where I led classroom tutorials, held office hours to answer student questions, and graded student essays and exams. I am happy to assist you in learning the foundations of academic research and writing so that you can excel throughout your college & university studies. I provide a free 30-minute consultation to allow us a chance to meet, discuss your goals and your hopes for our tutoring sessions, and provide an overview of how tutoring will proceed from there. You can then book sessions with me at my regular rate of $80 p/hr as needed. All sessions will be provided in an online format. I will begin accepting new clients effective September 2, 2023. For Academic Research & Writing Inquiries, I can assist you with: 1. An overview of the research process & strategies for finding books and journal articles relevant to your research topic; 2. An overview of the desired layout of an academic essay & the basics of formulating a thesis statement; 3. The essential elements of strong sentence structure and paragraph flow, good grammar, and persuasive writing; 4. Assistance with learning citation styles such as Chicago; and 5. Editing strategies & support to produce your best finished product. For Political Science student inquiries, I can assist you by: 1. Helping you to understand content from first and second-year political science classes; 2. Helping you to understand the basics of Canadian & American government--with detailed explanations of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches in either country--along with constitutional politics and federalism, party politics, gender and politics, protest and social movements (e.g. 2SLGBTQ+ activism), and historical injustice; 3. Providing an overview of the field of comparative political science; and 4. Assisting you with navigating content in upper-year undergraduate or graduate political science courses. For Law student inquiries, I can assist you by: 1. Providing study strategies for navigating the workload in law school; 2. Helping you hone your FIRAC skills & outlining strategies; 3. Assisting you with strategies to succeed in legal research & legal writing as well as support in learning McGill citation; 4. Helping you to understand content in first-year constitutional law & criminal law courses; 5. Helping you to understand content in upper-year courses including labour & employment law, administrative law, evidence law, sentencing, criminal procedure, and civil procedure; and 6. Helping you with navigating material in other first-year or upper-year courses, where possible. I also provide resume and cover letter reviews. I have a flat fee of $150 for a resume review, which includes one cover letter; additional cover letters for $25 each. You will receive detailed feedback on your resume and cover letter(s) and suggested changes in track changes on Microsoft Word. Email me to schedule a consultation today! I look forward to hearing from you.
