Nikon D500 and NIKKOR af-s 200-500mm f/5.6E ed vr combo, this is the best Nikon F mount birding package. The auto focus system in D500 is the same as the one in the flagship D5, and 200-500 VR lens is long enough for normal birding task, especially using in a APS-C body. The D500'sback display lcd screen has a crask on the bottom edge of the glass (I acidentially bumped it to a rock when shooting low angle one time, see picture), it's still functional 100%, I just put a screen protector on it so it is not affecting any daily usesage. If you want to replace that screen, can find a store to get it done for about $200-300. The 200-500 lens has a UV protection lens on it since day one, no issue what so ever. I have replaced the lens mount to an arca swiss plate, of course you can change it back to the original Nikon one (see picture). I also have a third party battery pack for D500, which will be more than enough for your high demanding shooting task. Also this lens is very very sharp, see the attached photo I took using this system.
