We adopted Chewie this Christmas from the Ontario SPCA. We saw a picture of him and immediately fell in love. He is a gorgeous dog! When we met him, they told us that they weren't sure if he was good with cats, other dogs or kids. Even though we have all of the above, we decided (naively) that we would teach him to be kind to our cats. (He was very good with our 9 year old son). Turns out Chewie isn't good with cats, kids and has such a drive to chase deer that it took me 2 hours to catch him today. Animal Control got involved and told me that it is very difficult to 'change a dog's mind' when it comes to prey drive; and, if he catches a deer and injures it, they would need to take serious action against Chewie. For Chewie's sake, I need to find him a home where none of these issues are so prominently in his life. Chewie is a German Wirehaired Pointer crossed with yellow lab. He was born on Sept 28, 2018 (so 1 year 3+ months). He has all his vaccinations and has been neutered (only just in November 2019). He is VERY bright and is VERY energetic. He calms down though and sleeps very well through the night. He is house-trained, although he had a couple of accidents when he first got to our house. I think he was just really overwhelmed. We have been taking him to individual dog lessons and the trainer is good with him. He is able to do everything she asks of him. He is already 'wait'ing when asked, and he has learned to 'sit' and (almost!) gives a paw. He will 'stay' and 'come' when treats are involved and distractions are not involved. We really, really wish that we could remove his obsessive compulsive behaviour or have time and space to deal with it. He'd be a perfect dog. Please let me know if you'd be interested in meeting Chewie. I have a lot more information that needs to be shared before we will consider rehoming him.
