Indigenous Liaison Worker

Job Summary: The Indigenous Liaison supports, provides leadership, cultural awareness, counseling & traditional healing to meet inmates' needs while in custody at Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre. Connect with Indigenous communities regarding inmates, services & resources. Key responsibilities Include: *Provides spiritual leadership & counselling to individuals/ groups of indigenous inmates; *Identify, develop & coordinate programs to benefit indigenous inmates; *Plan & deliver cultural awareness activities that promote Indigenous cultural heritage & involve inmates in traditional ceremonies including, Talking Circles, Smudge, Pipe and Sweat Ceremonies; *Coordinate an Indigenous Art program within VIRCC including, Beading, Dream Catchers, Painting, Drum making, etc.; *Provide a link between Indigenous inmates and Elders for spiritual support; *Meet with Indigenous inmates to assist in the development of viable release plans; *Provide counselling for Indigenous inmates specifically related to spirituality and life skills; *Meet with Indigenous inmates to provide guidance *Provide cultural information sessions to VIRCC staff. Skills and Abilities *Excellent liaison, networking and advocacy skills *Well developed listening skills with ability to empathize and establish rapport with inmates *Strong written and oral communication skills *Proven community development/networking skills *Working knowledge indigenous governments as it relates to health and well being services *Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity & sound work ethic *Excellent organizational/time management/file management Qualifications *Post Secondary Diploma in Social Services or another relevant diploma/work experience *Must provide a clear CRC and Vulnerable Sector Check *This will be a contract position effective December /2019 - March 31st/2020 with the potential to become full time Apr 2020. *Hours will be 21 hrs per week (times to be negotiated) *Competitive Salary *Must have a reliable vehicle Position to remain open until filled.
