Collier is a well-known artist living in Japan. The Grassho (thatched roof) style houses, which Collier drew his inspiration from, can be found in the historic village of Shirakawa-go in far northern Gifu Prefecture. The village's steep terrain of mountainous forest is characteristic. In between the mountains flows the Shō River. The village is a rare example of Grassho architecture found in Japan. This specific style of architecture evolved because when a village was remote and isolated for long periods of time. Gassho refers to a unique farmhouse style which makes use of structural systems that will adapt to the environment. The houses all have steeply pitched thatched roofs and very solid interior beams. They have been preserved in groups, many with their original outbuildings which has permitted the associated landscapes to remain intact. The painting on the left (29 1/2"x 22 1/2') is $325 and the painting on the right (21"x17") is $240, if bought separately, and $525 if bought together,
